چکیده

Monte Carlo simulations were used to investigate the conformational and electrical properties of isolated weak polyelectrolytes in the presence of an oppositely charged particle. Titrations curves were calculated to get an insight into the role of pH on the degree of ionization and conformation of isolated chains. The effect of ionic concentration and polyelectrolyte length on the titration curves was also investigated. The complex formation between the isolated polyelectrolyte and the oppositely charged particle was considered at different pH and ionic concentration values. The adsorption/desorption limit was calculated and the effect of the polyelectrolyte adsorption on the titration curves investigated. In particular, it was demonstrated that the presence of an oppositely charged particle clearly increases the degree of ionization of the weak polyelectrolyte and that ionic concentration plays a subtle role by increasing/reducing both the attractive energy between the polyelectrolyte and the particle and the polyelectrolyte degree of ionization. q 2004 Elsevier Ltd. Flexible charged macromolecules on mixed fluid lipid membranes: theory and Monte Carlo simulations.

Fluid membranes containing charged lipids enhance binding of oppositely charged proteins by mobilizing these lipids into the interaction zone, overcoming the concomitant entropic losses due to lipid segregation and lower conformational freedom upon macromolecule adsorption. We study this energetic-entropic interplay using Monte Carlo simulations and theory. Our model system consists of a flexib...

Conformational properties of an adsorbed charged polymer.

The behavior of a strongly charged polymer adsorbed on an oppositely charged surface of a low-dielectric constant is formulated by the functional integral method. By separating the translational, conformational, and fluctuational degrees of freedom, the scaling behaviors for both the height of the polymer and the thickness of the diffusion layer are determined. Unlike the results predicted by s...

Critical adsorption of polyelectrolytes onto charged Janus nanospheres.

Based on extensive Monte Carlo simulations and analytical considerations we study the electrostatically driven adsorption of flexible polyelectrolyte chains onto charged Janus nanospheres. These net-neutral colloids are composed of two equally but oppositely charged hemispheres. The critical binding conditions for polyelectrolyte chains are analysed as function of the radius of the Janus partic...

Effect of temperature on the reentrant condensation in polyelectrolyte-liposome complexation.

Interactions of oppositely charged macroions in aqueous solution give rise to intriguing aggregation phenomena, resulting in finite-size, long-lived clusters, characterized by a quite narrow size distribution. Particularly, the adsorption of highly charged linear polyelectrolytes on oppositely charged colloidal particles is strongly correlated and some short-range order arises from competing el...

Interaction between like-charged polyelectrolyte-colloid complexes in electrolyte solutions: a Monte Carlo simulation study in the Debye-Hückel approximation.

We study the effective interaction between differently charged polyelectrolyte-colloid complexes in electrolyte solutions via Monte Carlo simulations. These complexes are formed when short and flexible polyelectrolyte chains adsorb onto oppositely charged colloidal spheres, dispersed in an electrolyte solution. In our simulations the bending energy between adjacent monomers is small compared to...
